The shower, bathtub, toilet, and sink were new and nicer, and our room keys and name tags now hung on a metal chain, rather than the lanyards that I remembered. The shutters did a better job of keeping out the light. There were lots of plugs, not just one, so that we could charge our laptops, iPads, smart phones. And, the camp had Wi-Fi – both a blessing and a curse. I suspect that many of the readers of this blog have had similar experiences with their children where they returned to favorite places on a regular basis, and only stopped when children grew up.
My best friend moved away, and with her went two very strong presences on the worship team. People have stepped in to replace them and are doing a great job. It’s just something I’ll have to get used to. Nearly any trace of my Senior class has been removed or painted over. We’re now on the dusty shelves of yearbooks, not to be thought of again until the next big reunion. The song "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" by the Shangri-Las is made of this trope.

Tourists loved the area so much they moved here driving away the essence they liked when they visited. George Webber has written a successful novel about his family and hometown. Well, I thought that was the most logical approach to the idea of moving away… don’t do it unless the stars are all aligned. That beautiful exterior would start to crack and the struggles begin. The Portland we fell in love with would become the same as every other city. After a lot of debate, we agreed how we felt about Portland was nostalgic because that’s where we said “I do”.

Maybe I didn’t try hard enough to get people to like me. Outside of college, I was anti-social because I was afraid people would see who I truly am and hate me. They’d find out I don’t like sleepy music, that I don’t sugarcoat anything, that I’m not some overly chipper girl without a chip on her shoulder, that I’m not who I should be to fill glittery, rose-colored shoes. I’m not a typical wedding photographer. It reminds me of telling people with cats that I’m allergic to cats and they act like I just told them I hate cats with the fire of a thousand suns.

Overall, the days were filled, and at the various meals which were served buffet style at large tables, we were able to meet new people, some of whom became friends, some of whom did not. The snow underneath my feet crushes softly. I feel the coldness seeping in through my shoes.
For the record, I don’t hate cats but I am a dog person. One attempt to describe hiraeth in English says that it is “a longing to be where your spirit lives.” This description makes some sense out of the combination of words that describe this feeling. Maybe your spirits home could even be neither of the above, one from which you are not only separated by space or time, but instead a place that never was, where you can only go in your imagination. Yes, snow can be heavy especially after lifting up a lot at one time. After shoveling it once you may have to go out at least three more times during the day and repeat it depending on how hard the snow coming down.
I live in the same house, and my parents and my brother are still there, but we no longer have the carefree summer breaks I remember fondly from my childhood. I will be greeted not by the cat I had as a kid, but by the dog my family got three years ago. Your blog post really resonated with me this week. I too was all too familiar with the feeling of homesickness first semester.
